Enjoyed: An Indie Rock Tribute to Bjork's Post

My employers at Stereogum commissioned artists including the Liars, Dirty Projectors, and a bunch of other bands to do a song-for-song cover album of Bjork's Post. It's available for free download here, along with an interview with Bjork. (I figured this was momentous and cool enough to share without it seeming like 'corporate' shilling!)

But expect a lot of corporate shilling from me soon!

Releasing Tomorrow: Yoga For Indie Rockers

From deep in the heart of Netfix's new releases this week: Yoga for Indie Rockers:

"...certified yoga instructor Chaos leads this program set to three hard-driving beats so you can choose the music to fit your mood: indie rock, electronic or pop-punk. The soundtrack includes songs from Kevin Devine, Paulson, Jet Lag Gemini, Roses Are Red, the Bruises, Two Lone Swordsmen, House of Fools, Dillinger Escape Plan, Crash Romeo and many others."

Chaos is joined by her assistant instructor, Natural Tendency Toward Decay. Also, I've only heard of two of those bands.

New York Is So Cool Ringtone

Remember that song "New York is So Cool" from a few years ago? I was making ringtones this weekend after finding this site (for making ringtones) and this site (for uploading them to my phone) and I used it as my tester. I liked it enough to use it as my text ringtone and I thought I may as well share it:

This Time I'll Be Nice

I don't usually write about music here, but despite a ton of decent releases this late Winter/Spring, the one I've had on repeat-all since the moment I first heard it is Yours to Keep by Albert Hammond, Jr. I've been lax in my music-blog reading (lately it's all comedy, all the time), so I'm sure there's all kinds of love for this album already, but to add to whatever cacophony of adoration there may already be: it's fantastic. It makes me nostalgic for Is This It while somehow being simultaneously more earnest and more self-aware than the Strokes ever were. My favorite song is Bright Young Thing (track 4), but really, I love them all.

A quick Google search shows I'm not the first person to notice the it-had-to-be-intentional homage to Hilary Duff's "Wake Up" on "101". For reasons I can't even explain, I found that to be a brilliant touch.

Anyway, it's good.

Me, 12:29 AM, To Mark and Kerry: What arcade f did kinda ruins them for me. I'm shaking my head. I'm disgusted, honestly.

Mark, 12:30 AM, To Me: I am out, now I can't wait 2 see it!

Me, 12:33 AM, To Mark and Kerry: Sorry, snl, no big deal, I'm probs the only one to care.

Mark, 2:32 AM, To Me (I was asleep): The guitar smash on SNL turned Arcade Fire into legit superstars. Best band of their generation? Right now, yes. Amazing.

Me, 9:26 AM Sunday, To Mark: Cheap stunt. They're better than that and more orig. Lots of kids would have liked that guitar.

Mark says he'll be arguing his case later, but we're gonna have to agree to disagree: breaking that guitar made me lose respect for that band. When Nirvana did it, they were huge, and it was a commentary on consumerism, etc. When Arcade Fire did it the other night, it was a cheap, unoriginal cry for attention. My brother is a guitar teacher, and he won't even leave any of his guitars in his trunk when he goes to dinner, he brings them with him in case the car is broken into. I dunno -- that kind of respect seems more authentic to me. I think Arcade Fire should donate the cost of that guitar to a talented kid who can't afford an instrument, and next time they're desperate for press they should just tear up a picture of the f**king Pope.

UPDATE: 20 emails later...geez, let's agree to disagree, deal? I didn't say they suck, I said I lost respect. And yes, I saw the guitar strings break, and I think destroying it out of frustration would be even lamer (if it were possibly the case, which it's not. Let's not be naive.)

I changed the "celebrity douchebags" tag to "gleeful provocation." Let's just relax.

Ford & Fitzroy

My friends Jay and Glenn are in a band called Ford & Fitzroy. I just watched this clip of them at Jen Carlson's latest Moveable Hype show and I'm kind of totally blown away. (Even though I'd listened to and really liked their songs, I didn't realize it was Jay singing!)

Their next show is March 10 at Piano's. (This is still not a music blog.)

burning down the house

My ex boyfriend Max's band is playing Bowery Ballroom Saturday night, and I'm bringing a posse. They're called The Information, they're from Boston, and their songs can be heard/downloaded here. My favorite is still "A Simple Plan". Even my friends who hate him like it!

They also put on a really really great show. I genuinely recommend checking them out. And the new songs aren't even about me!
