The same friend who found a sublet after I posted that she needed one here in April (this site IS good for something after all) is looking, with her 2 roommates, for a subletter for a different room in the apartment. It's in (safe) Williamsburg/Bushwick and it's very cheap. Like, amazingly cheap. I now know the roommates and they're really nice and cool (Hi JC!) They're not going to put it on Craig's List in order to get a more targeted sampling. Anyway, if you know someone who's interested, email me and I'll forward it to my friend.

Last night I ran into a nice girl I used to see at shows a few years ago and who had a music blog at the time. She said this, very earnestly/nicely/no subtext:
"Are you still doing the blogging thing? I had to quit when I started college."
AHHH! I felt so old. My friends really enjoyed it, though, of course.

* We posted the August Ritalin Reading lineup. Also there is now a widget type deal right there to your right that will have the upcoming lineup as soon as it's posted. I was very busy this weekend.
* Speaking of, the aforementioned I Like Attention show last night was SO AWESOME. Every second of it was hysterical - I highly recommend going next month.

Entertainment Weekly's Owen Gleiberman on The Ten: "Thou Shalt Be Amused"

There is a new show: The Pick Up Artist on Vh1. It's based on that dumb book The Game. It is maybe going to be my favorite show. What's amazing about it is when you watch it you're not really making fun of the contestants because they're nice guys. You're making fun of the pick up experts. (And their hats that you're not allowed to touch until you buy them a drink!)
More later, I'm spontaneously going to the beach. Just watch. that. show. Trust me!

Since neither of us still live in the old building, I got over my fears and wrote about my former neighbor Corey F's new show for NY Mag's The Vulture:
"The Two Coreys: One Cyberstalker's View"
Sincerely: I think Corey (F) will find a better vehicle. This one just isn't the one. At least he comes off well in the show.

As commenters mentioned on the Ten post, Paul Rudd was on Fresh Air last week. It's a cool interview because he talks more about his teenage awkwardness (and Accutane use) than he does his movies. Also Terry clearly has a cruuushh.

When friends write fan fiction, it's a terrifying, hilarious thing.

I was really good about managing my expectations on this one, so I'll just say: I recommend it. I laughed many times and so did the other people in my theater. But that said, I have friends who hated it. I kind of chalk that up to context (see: category tag) and difference in sense of humor (I love a good in-joke, others like broader comedy. Actually, I kind of love both, but the former is so rare in movies.)
I guess I didn't just say "I recommend it" but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who is as unfortunately very susceptible to the whole high expectations/low expectations phenomenon as I am. One thing is certain though: Paul Rudd is totally not sexy in it.
Pretty much completely unrelated: maybe this bothers me because I worked at a movie theater in college, but why is it that people who would never dream of allowing a straw wrapper to fall from their grasp without immediately picking it up off the dirtiest of city sidewalks think it's perfectly okay to leave a movie theater aisle totally destroyed by their garbage? I'm not even talking about strangers, I'm talking about the friend I saw the movie with yesterday! Totally not okay. And I am willing to passive-aggressively call out my friend in a public forum in the hopes that just one person will have an epiphany.

Because it's important to support artists who are attempting to make good things in a culture where good things are so rarely monetarily rewarded. So this weekend, if you're a fan of The State/Wet Hot American Summer/Good comedy, etc, go see The Ten. Don't wait. You know how important opening weekends are for a movie and these people who have given us so much good comedy deserve to make more in the future!
So, either see The Ten or see something else where The Ten is playing but buy your ticket for The Ten. But, preferably, see The Ten. With a large group! Here's where.
Sorry about the lecture, but it's important! Also, how can you resist Paul Rudd's olive green eyes? Randomly, here's a coloring page I made. Print and color. Click to enlarge:

Though I was initially fascinated by a salacious "scandal" in my sleepy hometown, I'm starting to think everyone should leave Robert Olen Butler and his broken heart alone. It's a hard position to justify ("Do you think Britney Spears should be left alone?") but I think this will be my standard: Public figures should be given attention in exact proportion with the amount of attention they seek -- maybe less, but not more.
Mr. Butler's email was itself irresistible to the media, but he had the choice not to "clarify" it to the press (until he did, it was being interpreted by some, including me, as a master work of subtle passive aggression instead of something Michael Scott would write) and he has the choice now to go back to doing what he does best. In other words, Mr. Butler, if you're Googling yourself, and I hope you're not: take the cardinal rule of blog commenting, flame wars, and hate emails and apply it to this: Say nothing. Do not respond or allow your friends to respond. Don't feed the animals.
UNLESS this is all just a publicity stunt to sell future books. In which case: I think you win.

I sent this (completely absurd) email out to a couple friends this morning. Now that we all have our tickets I'm willing to share this totally not-at-all-secret screening info. I'm un-generous that way (Note: it's also playing there tonight.)
Are you ready to experience "THE ULTIMATE"!?
It was the end of July, 2001 - remember those hot, heady days, sticky with innocence and covered with a sweaty glow of retarded laughter? Little did we know, during that sultry "summer of the shark attacks" that our world would soon be turned upside down, and not by Representative Gary Condit or a shark. How could we know, as we sat in cold, nearly empty theaters around the country, memorizing lines and practicing our slow claps, looks of pure wonder and joy on our faces, that we were watching the embodiment of irony's last, death-rattly gasp before it was busted to bits by forces we did not, could not, still don't, understand?
Tomorrow night at midnight at Landmark Sunshine Theater on Houston Street, we can relive the glory of Wet Hot American Summer on the big screen, surrounded by other drunk comedy fans in the full theater that beautiful movie always deserved.
And if you pass this up, the next time I see you I'll say: "You taste like a burger. I don't like you anymore."

"I can't imagine the utterance of this sentence, "I need to go to the Shore Mall to get...", unless it ended with "...scabies."
fourfour brings us along on a tour of the Saddest Mall in America. Hysterical! We had a mall like that in Tallahassee where I saw my first movie ('Song of the South') and bought stamps in bags of 300 for my "I only like the pretty ones" fake philatelic phase. It was called the Northwood Mall and eventually they gave up and now it's the Northwood Office Center and state workers work there.

So busy! Here are some things I've recently consumed and recommend:
* Notes on a Scandal (the movie) Yeah, it's been out a while, but wow. I would recommend it to anyone. Genius. Also, I'm not the kind of person who usually notices this type of thing, but even on my crappy old $40 craig's list TV, the use of color in this movie is amazing.
* But Enough About Me by Jancee Dunn. Don't be turned off, as I briefly was, by the subtitle. Reading the book, you realize it was slapped on there by the publisher. It's a great summer Friday read, albeit a little tidy at the end.
* I believe Eliot Glazer said this last week, but it deserves to be said again in as many ways as possible (and this is a particularly funny one): Sex and the City ruined New York.
Posted by Lindsay Robertson at 02:51 PM in great books, movies | Permalink | Comments (1)
* Vulture: Only 5.9% of today's Emmy-nominated late night comedy writers are women.
* (Possibly) Related: Women think Sex and the City is funny. (Personally, I think the dearth of women in comedy is less "women aren't funny" and more "women are perceived as not being funny", but nobody's helping the situation by making up words like "shoegasm.")
* Totally Unrelated: Holy $%*, a guy shot himself in the head while being caught on "To Catch a Predator" a year and a half ago.
* Idea: an RSS feed feature that automatically eliminates posts with certain tags from your feed. Inspiration: Harry Potter.

* Virginia Heffernan forced to interview the Evil One:
"I’m looking at it, cropping it, resizing it, drawing on it, making it my own.”
That's so weird that he said that to the Times and that's also coincidentally going to be his defense in the lawsuits against him! Funny!
* "What Eats, Doesn't Shoot, and Leaves" : And you thought your last group hug was awkward!
* The Top Ten Comedy Sketches of All Time (One message boarder's opinion, but a good list nonetheless) I'm firmly in "The Audition" camp for Mr. Show though, as I keep mentioning over and over as if anyone cares.
* Guess what? I've been hanging out with kids who ride bikes and now I want one too!! Mine got stolen a few years ago and I never replaced it. This one will get stolen too because I'm going to keep it on the street (5th floor walkup), so does anyone have an old crappy one they want to sell me for cheap? If so: email me!

* Band of Horses will play a full set

* Zulkey has an excellent and really informative interview with Anil Dash. It rocks. His part of the tag is "bloggers/blogging". "celebrity douchebags" is next...
* I've seen about 20 blog posts about Britney Spears' posting that her umbrella incident was all about her preparing for a role, but I haven't seen a single one that acknowledges that she is clearly being sarcastic. I mean, it's not like she's mastered the art of parody but it still seems obvious. I can't believe I just posted about BS.
* Jezebel is my kind of site and required daily reading. I can't believe I once thought it was going to be for the scary sadshaw demo. Totally the opposite. Nice!

I keep talking to people who haven't seen Flight of the Conchords yet. This is unacceptable. I watch each episode approximately 4 times and it's, like, the best show on TV right now! One of the most common excuses people have is "I don't have HBO." Well, get it for one month! It's worth it! Geez. What is wrong in the world today? It must be all the Inner City Pressure (I'm just going to let this be huge, whatever):
