The reference to The Bell Jar: I rolled my eyes at that line -- like that woman remembered a summer 9 years later and described it as "the summer they executed the Rosenbergs"? Could a summer really be so hot, and could the execution of the Rosenbergs be so inextricably linked to that heat that it would be both one of the most famous opening lines of a 20th century novel AND casual country club small talk by some ditz a year before that novel came out? This is really bothering me. (What is it about this show that causes extreme geekiness in people who are simultaneously bored to death by it?)
* Eh, compared to The Sopranos or things that are funny.
I know exactly what you mean. Joan's curves are distracting America from the story lines that never go anywhere.
