So last night me and my friend Stephanie watched Hannah Takes the Stairs on Movies OnDemand (did you know that it's on MOD for $5.95 and has been since the day it came out in theaters?) It's impossible to say whether I would have enjoyed the movie as much if I'd paid $11 for it and had to watch it in a theater without the luxuries of wine and a pause button (ETC), but we were both thoroughly entertained and talked about the movie for a while after it was over. OBSERVATIONS:
1. I was distracted by Greta Gurwig's shocking resemblance (in looks, mannerisms, everything) to my friend Emily Gould. It's funny because after watching the movie I went back and read Emily's Gawker post about it where she calls Greta "megahot". You know how in every set of identical twins, one is prettier? Well, they're like that and Emily is the prettier one. (Emily didn't like the movie, but maybe I wouldn't have either if I'd seen it in a theater with high expectations.)
2. As far as I can tell, 'mumblecore' is basically Laguna Beach or The Hills if you replaced everyone with slightly smarter, more interesting and funnier people. It's slight, but entertaining. Nobody will have an epiphany watching this movie, but it satisfies that part of the human brain that wants to watch other people similar to us, having (embarrassingly enough) the same conversations that we have had. (Like, verbatim, in some cases, which is kind of genius in the way that it shows us that we're not as special or original as we might sometimes imagine we are.) I will say that if I were maybe even a couple years older, I might find this movie extremely annoying.
3. The pluses: the acting in this movie might be the most natural acting I've ever seen. There was one scene in particular where you watch Hannah go from liking a guy to being totally over him in the span of a few seconds, and S and I were both amazed at how (I hate to use this word but I have to) true it was. We paused and talked about it for a few minutes.
4. There's a scene with these marble magnets where Hannah puts one in her mouth and the other on the outside of her cheek and it stays there because they're magnets. This was when I paused and announced that I was going to superglue a marble to my cheek and be Hannah for Halloween. This is much less of a genius idea, or even a reason to pause a movie, in the harsh sober light of today.
5. After the movie and the talking, I played Straight Outta Compton and did an interpretive serious spaz dance to it until Stephanie begged for mercy because she was laughing too hard to breathe. My point is the 30s are the new 20s. Or something.
SUMMATION OF FILM: Watch it like you would watch TV - with the pausing and the commentary, and you will probably enjoy this movie.
thank you. i now have a weekend movie. because, apparently, and for reasons unbeknownst to me, i refuse to watch my netflix'd copy of science of sleep.
