Congratulations Leitch and Daulerio!

Leitch_daulerio Congratulations are in order for two of my favorite gentlemen in the whole world and it feels appropriate to do it here since  I'm terrified of their site's commenters: Will Leitch, who today leaves Deadspin.com in a flurry of loving tributes (like seriously, he's not dead) to be a contributing editor at New York Magazine, and A.J. Daulerio, who steps up to the plate (get it, the plate?) as the new editor of Deadspin. Even though they're too busy now, I will never get a strange phone call or IM or email that I don't automatically assume is the two of them playing a prank. The internet and, especially, online writers owe a lot (in many cases, writing careers) to those two wonderful, generous, brilliant guys. I love you Will and AJ!

Just So You Know, I'm "Boycotting" WNYC's New Morning Show, "The Takeaway"

Takeaway_a_01_2 So last summer, a good friend of mine who I'll call "Michelle" saw a job listing for writers for a new NPR PRI morning show (nullus on the title of the job listing.) She was applying, and because she knew I was keeping an eye out at the time, she sent it to me and encouraged me to apply too (a typical example of the kind of generosity that should be typical but isn't in media. Michelle, though made ungoogleable here for obvious current-job reasons, is awesome.)

I know it's a dubious distinction...

This has to be the best thing that has ever been written on a Tumblr:

"Can anyone remember a more exciting election? How amazing is it that the Democratic party is choosing between the potential first African-American president and the first female president? Just having one of them as a viable nominee this late in the process would have been heartening; the fact that they’re both still at it might be cause for soul-searching and discomfort, but let’s be honest, it’s a nice problem to have."

Alex Balk endorses Obama
, in his special way. Also, the end is great.

'Trinkle Down' And Other Theories

This is hilarious: Dan Allen (awesome comedian and guy) has been using, of all words, the word "scatological" incorrectly. His entire life. And he thought it had something to do with jazz.

God Save the Fan!

Gstf If you're reading this site, you probably already know this, but if you have anyone in your life who cares about sports, Will Leitch's new book God Save the Fan: How Preening Sportscasters, Athletes Who Speak in the Third Person, and the Occasional Convicted Quarterback Have Taken the Fun Out of Sports (And How We Can Get It Back) is the perfect gift.

(This is also a reminder to people who were already planning to buy it to buy it today!)

(Also, genius cover by Jim Cooke!)

Mark Graham Bids Viacom Farewell, Defamer Hello

Defamer.com has a new position: Managing Editor. And it's Mark Graham! Wooooo!! Defamer has always been the most consistently high-quality GM site, and between Marks Lisanti and Graham it's poised to be part of the general "quality writing trumps cheap lazy salaciousness" blog trend that will finally happen in 2008 hopefully please god. Congratulations, Mark!

Win a Galley of "The Kept Man" by Jami Attenberg

My friend Jami's first novel, The Kept Man, comes out December 27th, and her publisher is having a contest: you just print out a poster, post it somewhere, take a picture, and send it to Jami. Info here. I think everyone wins a galley while supplies last, and while I haven't read the book yet, I have heard from an EXTREMELY hard to please blogger friend who doesn't know Jami that it's "really good."

Sloane Crosley Really Is That Great

But if I didn't know that for a fact, I might hate her a little after this (but don't! even her quotes came out self-deprecating. which is insane considering the medium):

The Most Popular Publicist In New York

Friend: "Are you jealous? Are you jealous?"
Me: "No way! She has to be a publicist!"

Sloane's very funny book of essays, I Was Told There'd Be Cake, comes out in April. (And look, even Gawker can't really find anything actually mean to say about her!)

Writers on Writing

My friend John Green who is a real writer posted a video (partly) containing his writing advice, and I had to make sure he wasn't going to say the thing I hate that writers always say:

lindsay: Before I watch your writing advice video, are you going to say something about how writers write because they can't do anything else well, because I hate that.
lindsay: I'll still love you just as much, but I hate that.
lindsay: as if strawberry pickers pick strawberries because it's what they do well.
lindsay: I guess I'll just watch it and see
lindsay: I almost went to Camp Eagle's Nest!
John: no, that's stupid. I say that the key to writing is "more elf"
John: Did you really? I wish you had gone because maybe you would have known tiffany!
lindsay: yeah, but my parents saw the brochure and it said that children were encouraged to commune with the fairies and sprites of the forest around the camp and they thought that was satanic so I went to (ultra-Christian camp) The Vineyard.
John: yeah that's true
John: we spent a lot of time with the fairies.
lindsay: your writing advice is very good
John: well it's better than "try everything else first"
John: how stupid is that?
lindsay: I know!! that's Lorrie Moore. And I love her, but.. it's so pretentious. Usually though, it's ONLY BAD WRITERS who say it.
John: Like, "Go mine coal And if you're not good at that, then you should write books."
lindsay: like "I'm special, this is all I can do, I can't wait tables"
John: F**k that. Writing is the FIRST thing you should try
lindsay: YES!!
John: It's so easy!
lindsay: hahaha
lindsay: I want to put up this conversation
lindsay: let's say more witty things
John: I think you should end it with "let's say more witty things"

DONE. Anyway, if you ever hear anyone say that they write because it's "all they can do", smack that person in the head with a busboy tray full of dirty dishes and wet used food. Thank you.

Max Silvestri: The Interview, The Awesome T Shirt

Maxsilvestri_custom_2 My friend Max Silvestri did an interview with Gridskipper about his favorite NYC places to consume things. Today, they have a map of those places.

A good place to see Max perform comedy would be at his monthly show, "I Like Attention", the next of which is this Sunday, October 14 at 8pm. His co-host this month is none other than Gabe Delahaye. I can't wait!

Incidentally, I'm 99% sure that Max's tshirt in the (above) Gridskipper picture is an illustration from a 70's-era "Where do Babies Come From?" book I checked out from the library when I was in elementary school. (In retrospect, I checked out that entire section. I guess I probably wasn't fooling anyone, huh?)

Anyone Looking for a Sublet in Wmsburg 9/1?

The same friend who found a sublet after I posted that she needed one here in April (this site IS good for something after all) is looking, with her 2 roommates, for a subletter for a different room in the apartment. It's in (safe) Williamsburg/Bushwick and it's very cheap. Like, amazingly cheap. I now know the roommates and they're really nice and cool (Hi JC!) They're not going to put it on Craig's List in order to get a more targeted sampling. Anyway, if you know someone who's interested, email me and I'll forward it to my friend.

Celebrity Snark

On this week's The Sound of Young America Podcast:

Jesse Thorn interviews my pals Amelie Gillette and Alex Blagg about "celebrity snark". Both Amelie and Alex defend the views of my other friend, "The Editor of Gawker Media" (sic, why can't anyone get it right?) Emily Gould against Jesse's seemingly unwavering adoration for Jimmy Kimmel, his suspenders, and his completely hypocritical views on celebrities. (Ok, I may be a leeeeetle biased.)

Whether or not I agree with Jesse (or his devil's advocate position, possibly) about the necessity of alternatives to the publicity machine when it comes to celebrity coverage, I donate to The Sound of Young America every month and you should too.

* Ben Greenman's book came out recently: A Circle is a Balloon and Compass Both: Stories about Human Love

* Jeff Johnson has a new column on Gawker called The Strategerist! First up: 12 Steps to Fix Dina Lohan

* I'm (still) loving John and Hank Green's immensely popular Brotherhood 2.0

"staying grounded"

"In Defense of Ultragrrrl"

The Voice's Tricia Romano does the best job of trying to explain the Ultragrrrl phenomenon I've seen so far: In Defense of Ultragrrrl

I don't think Sarah is definable or explainable, and that's what makes people who don't know her uncomfortable with her. They don't know what to do with her or how to label her or how to become like her, because it's impossible: Sarah was born Sarah. And that drives some people nuts.

(This is long so I'm putting it after the jump.)

Will Leitch Mistaken for Donovan Leitch

Will Leitch is down in Austin this week for SXSW. He just sent this hysterical IM:

"I swear to God, I just had this conversation with someone calling my hotel room phone.

Me: Hello?
Caller: Yeah, Don?
Me: No, I'm sorry, I believe you have the wrong room.
Caller: Really? They said this room is registered under "Leitch."
Me: Yes. That's me. My name's Will Leitch.
Caller: Your last name is Leitch?
Me: Yes. Honest.
Caller: Oh. I'm trying to reach Donovan.
Me: Donovan Leitch? Donovan Leitch is in this hotel?
Caller: Yeah, and I thought this was his room.
Me: I've always wanted to meet him. We have the same last name and all, and it's somewhat unusual.
Caller: You sure he's not there?
Me: Well, I haven't seen him, but I've been kind of busy and haven't had a chance to scan the room.
Caller: OK. Well, when I find him, I'll tell him there's another Leitch in the hotel.
Me: Please do."

LOL. I hope Will runs into Donovan at the hotel.

Because This Almost Always Works Part 9 Or Something

(UPDATE: IT WORKED AGAIN! Thank you to everyone who emailed, especially the one who got her a place. Yay.)

One of my best friends, a female in her late 20's, is looking for a temporary sublet (room, not full apartment) starting April 1st (or before) preferably in Brooklyn. She doesn't spend a lot of time at home so it's more like a place to put her stuff. I've lived with her a few times over the years and she's the perfect roommate and the most polite and considerate person I know. Literally. If you know of anything (cheap, it's a sublet not a lifestyle), email me!

The Roast of AJ Daulerio: Best. Thing. Ever.

The coolest thing ever happened last Friday. Because our friend AJ Daulerio is moving to Philadelphia, Will Leitch and Aileen Gallagher organized a surprise roast for him. For over a month, we had to keep it secret, but it was all worth it when it went off without a hitch (AJ was surprised, tons of his friends came out, we were funny, and he loved it). Gawker videographer Richard Blakeley was there to capture AJ's speech at the end of the roast:

One of the best nights of my life! (Note: if only ONE other roast takes place in the next six months, this will officially qualify as a Sunday Styles trend piece.)

Some photos after the jump. (UPDATE: NINE MINUTE long video on Deadspin. Unfortunately, technical difficulties prevented Eric Gillin's roast from being included, which sucks since he was hysterical.)

Ford & Fitzroy

My friends Jay and Glenn are in a band called Ford & Fitzroy. I just watched this clip of them at Jen Carlson's latest Moveable Hype show and I'm kind of totally blown away. (Even though I'd listened to and really liked their songs, I didn't realize it was Jay singing!)

Their next show is March 10 at Piano's. (This is still not a music blog.)

R We H8ing? No.

Fact: It is not hypocrisy to plug something your friend wrote, even if she wrote it for a column you've loudly hated for years, if that thing your friend wrote is objectively good.

Therefore, it is with pleasure that I congratulate my friend Sandra Barron the inclusion of her essay in the new book, Modern Love: 50 True and Extraordinary Tales of Desire, Deceit, and Devotion.

Sandra was a guest on the Brian Lehrer Show this morning, and her segment can be downloaded or streamed here (2nd segment).

Sundance is Sooooooo Coool

I'm not a jealous person, especially of my friends, and I know travelling for work isn't "fun" per se, but do all of them have to get to go to Sundance for free and blog about it? I mean, geez, in alphabetical order:

Jessica Coen's Sundance Blog at Vanity Fair (Actually it's the Oscar blog w/ Sundance Posts below, but she's writing both.)

Whitney Pastorek's Sundance Blog at Entertainment Weekly (video!) [and here (text!)]

Which reminds me of an old song: New York is So Cool: Download X-1_NYissocool.mp3

Nobody Puts Whitney in a Corner

I love this comment on Whitney Pastorek's "rant against SNL" (FULL DISCLOSURE NAME DROP (the dumbest kind of name-drop): We're so like this (two fingers entertwined)):

"Why does an EW Reporter named "Debbie Cuntsler" automatically mean "Whitney Pastorek"...I mean, it just sounds like a TOTALLY made-up name."

Actually, commenter, here's some little-known Whitney trivia for you: she was actually born "Deborah Whitney Pastorek Cuntsler", but changed it when she moved to the big city, full of dreams. So, like, you'd be mad too.

Hi.
You are cute. I was the girl in the orange dress.
The End.

  • this is in or around 50th and 8th
  • no -- it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

Says Blagg:

lindsay: I'm sure you wrote, I mean, saw :)
blagg: clearly this has reached the blogger action network
blagg: i've received this IM about 12 times now
lindsay: me too! Carney was first, though.

And then it got...more boring and nerdy. There's really no point to this post. I do sort of like the idea of an orange dress though, now.

A: Love Is... is Forever

My Chicago friend Stevie introduced me to the wonder that is the endlessly-running "comic" strip 'Love Is...' Yesterday she sent out an email titled "Worst Love Is in Years and Years" with a link to this one.

Today, after I begged her to apply her photoshop skills, she made a minor tweak:

Forlindsay

(Nice filename joke, too. Thanks, Stevie!)

(Yeah, I know someone did Love Is... captions a few years ago, but I don't have that kind of Google time today.)

(Title hint: Old joke: Q: what's the difference between love and herpes? A: herpes is forever. I admit, it was a convoluted allusion.)

And now it's here. The presence of these two in my city will increase my personal happiness by a good 40%.

2. My beloved Stephanie Tillman aka Stiff aka Drinking Stiff finally returns from the "one month" trip to Europe she embarked upon last May 1st. I can now stop crying every time I walk by San Loco on Stanton, the last place I saw her face.

Yay.
